Storytelling in Business is a Strategic Tool

Microsoft wanted me to help their sales team sell with stories. Amgen wanted their marketing team to communicate their value proposition more clearly. Oracle wanted their trainers to be more engaging. Deloitte wanted their people to stop hiding behind numbers and data and learn how to make an emotional connection.

Like any tool, stories only work if you know how to use that tool. That’s where I come in. I’ve been teaching my Story Theater Method for strategic storytelling since 1996. A recent student that happened to be an engineer referred to my method as storytelling technology for business.

The Magic is in Method

You don’t have to be a natural born storyteller to become an effective storyteller. Like most things, storytelling is a learned skill. It’s much more about craft that it is about talent. Most students improve very quickly once they discover the magic in the method.

A Step-by-Step Process

My training programs are generally half-day or full-day sessions. I take people through a very logical and linear step-by-step progression. Students learn how to choose the right story, craft the story for maximum impact and how to present the story.

One-on-One of Group Presentation Situations

Stories work just as well one-on-one as they do in a small or large group presentation. The form and structure of the story and the elements that go into the story differ depending on the situation. That’s why people struggle with storytelling. It looks easy but it’s actually rather complex. If you want predictable results from your story, you need to know what you’re doing.

Delete Data Dumps That Don’t Work

Everyone knows data dumps don’t work and yet they keep on doing them. But knowing something doesn’t work and having something better to replace it with is a different story. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve been brought in to teach storytelling because their people are putting their clients’ into a content coma with too much technical information, I’d have a thriving business.

Hey, I do have a thriving business. Maybe I should be glad people are doing data dumps.
